Making Sense of The Civil War is a five-part reading and discussion program sponsored by Humanities New York and facilitated by Albany Diocesan Cemeteries’ Historian Kelly Grimaldi.

This program will make you think critically about the war and the America it forever changed.

Thursdays in June (1, 8, 15, 22, 29), 2023

10:00 – 11:30am

The Living Room Art Gallery at Historic St. Agnes Cemetery

48 Cemetery Ave. Menands, NY 12204

The selected readings provided by Humanities New York are intended to spark lively and interesting discussions including the vast sweep and profound breadth of the Civil War, its reasons, its consequences, and its lasting impact on American culture.

The Civil War is an interesting topic that has been buried in cliche and misconceptions. Historians’ understanding of the Civil War is defined and redefined with each passing generation. This program allows us to reach beyond what we think we know about the Civil War by posing questions such as: When Americans found themselves in a civil war, did they truly understand what was happening to them and why? Was it just about the issue of slavery and a quest for emancipation or did the war have a lot of additional layers that are overlooked and underappreciated? Is what you know about the Civil War based on fictional stories or have you studied firsthand testimony available in preserved documents and publications?

There is no fee to attend, all reading materials are on loan from Humanities New York.

Please pre-register with Kelly: (518) 350-7679 or [email protected].

Funding provided by Humanities New York.
