November 3, 1933 - August 30, 2021
Katie Brown, a loving mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, wife and sister, returned home to Jesus, laughing on Monday, August 30, 2021. Kathleen Ann Bergan Brown loved life and made the most of hers. Her spirit was ageless. Nothing gave Katie more joy than her children and she made no bones about it. Ok, maybe her grandchildren. She was a dear friend to many and delighted in gathering everyone often for her home-cooked meals. She took the Joy of Cooking seriously and toiled lovingly over every meal she made. Thousands of them. Lamb stew, chicken and biscuits, key lime pie, scotcheroos, pot roast, blueberry pie, the list is endless. Tiny pancakes, homemade birthday cakes. And recipe boxes for the offspring. Her parties were legendary, especially the time she found the bagpiper asleep in the basement the day after her annual St. Patrick's Day fete. The mayhem of raising five children did not deter her from throwing special birthday parties for each one - there were streamer cutting contests at the fire place, pin-the-tale, all in service to the fun. She was an artist and a calligrapher, and many a wedding Illumination hang in the homes of the betrothed everywhere. She was a steadfast supporter of her husband, Tom, and his accomplishments, throwing election parties, stuffing envelopes, and monitoring his diabetes with vigilance. She kept the homefront running while he was out lawyering. Big breakfasts for him everyday, packed lunches for the six heading out the door, and a full course meal every night for decades and decades. Her time between Florida and Forest Lake kept her near what made her happy - good weather, the ocean, the lake, and her family. She was always a gracious host and impressed upon her family the importance of being Irish. That was it - we were Irish and lucky for it. To that end, mom made her way to Ireland numerous times - it was imperative that we go as a family. So we did. One time she and her sisters rented a castle to throw a party for the relatives there. Then there was the time they marched in the Dublin parade on the blessed day with chunks of shamrocks plucked from the ground and pinned to their lapels. Ireland was but a wee touch of her travels. She saw the world, and every single state. Katie had a steadfast and joyful faith and spent much of her life praying for people and asking them to pray for her. She was the founder of the Laughing Jesus Society. Katie earned her master's degree in counseling from the state University at Albany, and her bachelor's degree from The College of Saint Rose. She was a proud alumna of both Vincentian Institute and St. Teresa's Elementary School in Albany. Katie is survived by her five children and their families: Cailin, J., Fiona and Liam Leary; Kerry, John, Kathleen, Shelagh and Maeve Conley; Megan Brown, Jeff, Justin and Brynn Anderson, Bergan, Amy, Owen and Devin Brown; and Michael Brown and Karen Hauth. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with her family on Wednesday, September 1, from 4-7 p.m. in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, Inc, 490 Delaware Ave. Albany. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 2, at 9 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, Homestead St. Albany. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
