    Thomas F. O'Brien Sr.

    November 1, 1946 - May 27, 2022

Thomas F. O'Brien Sr., 75 of Troy, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Friday, May 27, 2022, at his home in Narragansett, R.I. Tom was born on November 1, 1946, in Troy, the son of the late Joseph and Mildred (Gentile) O'Brien. Tom was predeceased in 2015 by his wife of 47 years, Marcia (Condon) O'Brien. Tom grew up in South Troy, attending St. Mary's School and LaSalle Institute. Tom was a 1968 graduate of Boston College and then completed his education with his master's degree from University at Albany. Upon graduation, Tom began his career as a teacher at The Wildwood School before moving to the N.Y.S. Office for People with Developmental Disabilities in Albany, where he retired after many years of service. Tom and Marcia met in high school and were married in 1969. Their love and devotion to each other set them apart and served as a shining example for their family. Tom spent many years volunteering for the Troy Patriots Pop Warner football program as well as spending time volunteering with The Special Olympics. Tom was a lifelong sports fan, cheering most loudly for his Boston College Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and New York Yankees. Nothing made him happier than attending all of his children and grandchildren's sporting events through the years. Tom enjoyed his summers in Narragansett, R.I., his winters in Marco Island, Fla. and the "in-between" time in Troy. Tom loved spending time with his family and friends relaxing on the beach, making his famous homemade pizza, or playing a boisterous game of Michigan Rummy. Tom is survived by his children and spouses, Tom (Maureen) O'Brien Jr. of Wynantskill, Shannon O'Brien of Troy, and Sean (Melissa) O'Brien of Scituate, Mass. He was the proud Papa of Riley, Lydon, Raegan, Quinn and Ainsleigh O'Brien. Tom is also survived by many lifelong friends, cousins and extended family members. Tom was a kind and humble man who will be missed greatly by those he leaves behind. The funeral service for Tom will be held on Saturday, June 4, at 9:15 a.m. at the Wm. Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third St., Troy, and at 10 a.m. in Christ Sun of Justice Chapel, 2125 Burdett Ave., Troy, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the funeral home on Friday, June 3, from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Special Olympics of the Greater Capital Region, 94 New Karner Road, Suite 208, Albany, NY, 12203.
